Ramseys

Virgil and Marguerite Ramsey

September 2005

The Scioto County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society is pleased to bring to your attention a scholarship fund which has been created through the Scioto Foundation which will honor Marguerite and Virgil Ramsey by providing scholarship assistance for a college student majoring in history.

The purposes of our Society include: "To create and build interest in preserving historical records of Scioto County and to take active part in collecting records and in making them available for use in genealogical research."

For over twenty years Marguerite and Virgil Ramsey lived those purposes. They have recorded tombstone inscriptions in all known Bloom and Vernon township cemeteries, helped to repair damaged grave monuments, obtained documents of local interest, and printed their findings in book form to aid others in genealogical research. They researched and wrote a book, "Iron Furnaces of the Hanging Rock Region" and were honored by the Chillicothe Historical Society for their efforts. They have been speakers for many programs of the Genealogical Society.

The Ramsey's have gathered a mass of material to assist people of the Scioto County area in their search for family history. They have opened their home to help any family researchers, whether known or unknown to them. It is because of their interest in family and history that the scholarship established will be for a student interested in history.

Both Marguerite and Virgil have been active workers in their church and community. Virgil has served as Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher, and Treasurer. Marguerite served Sunday School as pianist, teacher and advisor. Virgil has served as Village Treasurer in South Webster. Marguerite gave quilting demonstrations and won the Governor's Award for her Scioto County Historical Quilt. For many years she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the local Fire Department. She was also a worker at the main polling station for the Village of South Webster. They were both inducted into the Bloom Township High School Hall of Fame honoring their work for the community.

Marguerite Ramsey died October 1, 2005; Virgil still resides in South Webster. Their family is establishing this scholarship to the memory of Marguerite and honor Virgil. It is the hope of the family and the Scioto County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society that this scholarship will encourage future citizens to develop interests similar to those exemplified by Marguerite and Virgil Ramsey.

To be eligible for the Marguerite & Virgil Ramsey Scholarship Fund an applicant must be a graduate of a high school located in Scioto County, Ohio, be enrolled at an accredited college or university and be majoring in history. Applicants must be upperclassmen in at least their sophomore year of study.

We invite your participation in the form of a donation to the Marguerite & Virgil Ramsey Acorn Scholarship Fund. It will be managed by the Scioto Foundation and all proceeds will go to the scholarship fund. Donations may be sent to the Scioto Foundation, P.O. Box 911, Portsmouth, OH 45662.

Sincerely yours,

Scioto County Chapter Ohio Genealogical Society
Gladys Reynolds, President
